Legacy
Every collection holds a story. Je Me Souviens holds a legacy; one built on courage, change, and the quiet strength that shapes generations.
In the weeks following my grandmother's passing, I was far from home in a quiet stone fort in Canada. The air was cold and still, and on one of the walls I saw an aged bronze plaque that read: Je Me Souviens, which means I remember.
The plaque honored fallen soldiers, but in that moment, it brought her to mind. She was not a soldier, but she had fought her own battles, leaving Cuba with no money, no possessions, only her family and the determination to start over in Puerto Rico. She built a life from nothing, leaving behind a difficult environment for the only chance to give her family a better future.
Her story became the foundation for this collection. The plaque’s words became hers. The stillness of that fort became the weight of her memory.
From Memory to Garment
Je Me Souviens by Improper Identity is a tribute to courage, resilience, and the legacies we carry.
The back of each t-shirt reimagines the Canadian plaque, transforming it into a wearable emblem of sacrifice and strength. The hoodie features a zipper pull cast from a real key, the exact shape of one that once opened the door to a home built through perseverance.
The color palette of black, gray, and white reflects the gravity of remembrance; through details, flowers emerge: symbols of joy, renewal, and the beauty that remains after loss.
The Campaign
Photographed in soil and surrounded by blooms, the collection’s imagery speaks to the connection between roots and growth, permanence and change. The earth grounds the story; the flowers remind us that beauty can continuously bloom.
